The Votes are in! Tunstall’s Prom King and Queen are…
Heather Johnston and Chris Buckner were crowned at the Danville Golf Club right after Senior Walk commenced on Saturday, April 5th. Both of them commented that it was a shock to have received king and queen. “I thought people would have grown tired of me by now,” said Johnston. Johnston is the first girl in all of Tunstall’s history to have won Prom Princess, Homecoming Queen, and Prom Queen.
“I wasn’t expecting it,” said Buckner, “I didn’t even think about it until Friday and didn’t even cast a vote.”
Johnston and Buckner have both participated in multiple events at the school such as cheerleading, football, baseball, and showing school spirit whenever possible. “I think that it was pretty cool that Heather and I won both homecoming and prom this year,” said Buckner.
“I think that Chris and I both won because we are not afraid to be ourselves and we love Tunstall and always represent the school,” said Johnston.
Both royals had mixed views on what they felt when they were crowned. “I was happy, but then I was embarrassed because the crown wouldn’t fit,” said Buckner who constantly was having to readjust his crown or catch it as it begin to slip off of his head.
“I was so honored that such a wonderful group of people chose us,” said Johnston who also had complications due to her crown but only because of the hairpiece that she already had in place.
Both of their crowns are at their homes placed in an area where they can always see them and remember all of the fun times that they have had at Tunstall over the years.
“I have my array of crowns in nice boxes on my shelf with my senior sash from Homecoming Court,” said Johnston.
Once Buckner got home, he decided to replace the Homecoming crown on top of his lamp with his Prom King crown instead. “I thought it would match my room better,” he said.
Their two favorite songs of the night were “Turn Down For What” and “Nae Nae” because they could really get into the music and have fun.
Being their last year, both seniors will really miss attending prom. “I’m really going to miss dancing. I love dancing,” said Johnston.
“I’m going to miss hanging out with all of my friends and getting all dressed up,” said Buckner.
For prom prince and princess, Deshawn Chestnut and Peyton Loy were crowned. Neither of crowned juniors were expecting the recognition.
“I was like oh my god, no. I didn’t want to go up there because that was in front of everybody! It really should’ve gone to someone else,” said Loy.
“I didn’t know I was going to get picked, I heard everyone else calling my name,” said Chestnut.
Chestnut went home and put his crown on his dresser, while Loy handed hers over to her mother. “It’s in my mom’s room; she is proud of me. She sent a slideshow to my grandma,” she said.
After the music and dancing actually started, both the prince and princess had a great time.
“I liked it for my first time. It was pretty fun being there with all my friends,” said Chestnut. He attended prom with his girlfriend Erika Ocampo. “I always have fun with her,” he said.
Loy attended prom with Brandon Farris and a group of her friends. “Everyone seemed happy. Brandon was flippin’ gettin’ it; nobody could keep up with him,” she said.
“I appreciated all of the people who voted for me for prince,” said Chestnut.
