Martin balances life with school
Kacey Martin, who is a senior, is currently tied for valedictorian with Jessica Durand for the senior class of 2019.
Holding the title of number one in a class with over 200 students is considered to be an honor, but also very stressful. Many people may think because Martin is ranked number one that all she has time for is school, but that is not the case.
Kacey is an active member in four different clubs that take place in the school. “I’m in Beta and Interact and I’m an Interact officer. I also plan to join FCA and Deca because I was in those last year.”
Martin has taken many AP classes during her junior and senior years. She indicated that it typically takes her about 6 hours to complete homework assignments at home. “I take breaks to feed my bunnies.” She has two bunnies, named Pedro and Rosie, who she has had for 6 years.
Kacey is gifted all-around when it comes to her education, but her favorite is English. “I love to read and write.” In the Fall of 2019, Martin plans to attend Liberty University and major in nursing.
Although Kacey is academically gifted, she is also musically inclined. Martin can play the piano, guitar, ukulele, and violin. She began playing instruments at the age of 3. “Playing instruments has definitely made it easier to academically succeed because it’s an escape and it adds something that I love to my life when I don’t have school to focus on.” Martin is not certain yet on whether or not she is going to incorporate music into her future career.
Kacey also has a gift in drawing but says, “I don’t really draw that much, but I listen to music most of the day.” She began drawing in elementary school. “I would get the little drawing books from Twin Springs, but it’s not really one of my hobbies.”
Through all this chaos that she experiences from day-to-day, she says her free time is “not enough, but any free time I spend time with my family and friends.” Martin is a phenomenal example of a student who puts her academics first, but also enjoys her every day life of being a teenager.
