Comic-Con is a convention where people gather to celebrate comics, arts, and other forms of media topics, and for the first time ever, the city of Danville decided to host one on the campus of Averett University. Some of our very own staff and students attended the comic-con this past Saturday.
Mrs. Olivia Ingram, who just opened B & D’s Sports Cards and Comics, was one of the teachers involved in the comic-con. Her family, including her husband and children, had their own table advertising their comic store business.
“We have always loved comics and had hoped to be able to open a shop one day,” says Mrs. Ingram about opening the comic book store. “We knew it was our chance to make our dreams a reality.” Mrs. Ingram was cosplaying as Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite, a young lady that was taken from another timeline and positioned as the daughter of the dictator and preacher.
Ms. Brittany Atkins also attended the Comic-Con dressed as Caitlin Snow or Killer Frost from The Flash, who is a bio-engineer and a former scientist.
“I think the cool thing was that Danville even had a Comic-Con to begin with, and brought the world of comics to the city,” says Ms. Atkins about the con.
Senior Steven Hayes also joined in on the Comic-Con fun as he cosplayed as a thief from one of his own personal comics he created himself.
“I enjoyed seeing what there was to see and I had a good time,” says Steven. Steven’s favorite comic book is Full Metal Alchemist, a Japanese series.
During the Comic-Con there were many celebrity guests such as Lisa Varon, a professional wrestler for WWE; Bill Diamond, a puppeteer from Gremlins 2; Tommy Dreamer, another professional wrestler; Daniel Logan, who played Boba Fett in Star Wars episode 2; and Tyler Mane, who played Sabretooth in X-Men and Michael Myers in the remake of Halloween.
Local Danville Businesses used the Comic-Con as a chance to advertise. Some businesses included B & D’s Sports Cards and Comics (owned by Mrs. Ingram); King’s Cudgel, a video game store opening up this October; Firehouse Subs; Don’s Delights; Great Clips; Hibachi Guys; and various artists displaying their work.
The Comic-Con was a major success this past weekend and the Tunstall staff seemed to really enjoy themselves as they experienced a closer look.
