Students and staff all received a phone call at approximately 5 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11. Dr. Mark Jones announced that all Pittsylvania County Schools will be releasing at noon due to the upcoming inclement weather.

Michael made landfall around 2 p.m. in Mexico Beach, Florida on Wednesday, Oct. 10 arriving as a category four hurricane. As the hurricane moved quickly up north many of the southern states are feeling the wrath of the very fatal tropical storm.

Around noon on Thursday, Michael weakened all the way down to a Tropical Storm as it entered the Piedmont Region. Many assumed the storm would turn out the same way as Florence: a lot of rain.

Many businesses and homeowners did not prepare for the damage that was coming their way in the way of emergency flash floods and severe winds. So far, there have been three reported fatalities in the region.

Families all around had to learn quickly how to function and live with no power. There are currently over 35,000+ homes without power in the area.  Emergency crews are working around the clock to restore service to the area.

“I had seen the hurricane moving toward us, but only expected a little bit of rain. If it wasn’t for our pool we wouldn’t be able to do simple tasks like wash dishes or flush the toilet,” said local homeowner Kelly Wheeler.

Hurricane Michael had caused severe damage all around Pittsylvania County.

Roads scattered across Danville and Pittsylvania County have collapsed due to an excessive amount of rain in a short amount of time. Stony Mill Road has reported to be missing 50 to 100 feet of asphalt and is blocked off for all drivers

“I tried to venture out into town Thursday evening but was immediately stopped when I saw a road block, then looking a little further I saw that there was no road!” senior Kayla James stated.

THS students are all holding off their red and silver glitter until Monday, due to the Homecoming game being rescheduled at 6 p.m. The pep rally will also be held during 4th block of the rescheduled spirit day.

The upcoming weeks will be long and strenuous for the community to repair the damages caused by Hurricane Michael.
