The New Trojan Teachers

As students get used to an unusual school year, teachers settle into their virtual classrooms. These are the 8 teachers who have joined our Trojan family.
Mr. Matthew Bowman
Mr. Matthew Bowman is a new addition to the science department at THS. This is his first year teaching, and he is teaching Astronomy and Biology. He loves science "[because] with science you can do so many cool things, and hands on things, and really make it fun." Bowman graduated from Magna Vista and later attended Longwood University where he majored in Biology.
Ms. Lisa Baynes
Returning to Tunstall after being on retirement for 3 years, Ms. Baynes has come back to add on to her 33 years of teaching. She "loves marketing and the co-curricular organization Deca." Ms. Baynes says that the Tunstall community "Is family, and home."
Mrs. Laura Gregory
A new teacher joining the math department is Mrs. Laura Gregory. She has been teaching for 16 years and has taught at Dan River High School. She received her education from George Washington High School and then attended Averett University. "I love it here, everyone has been really nice and very helpful."
Mrs. Mariah Springs
Formerly known as Ms. Blankenship, Mrs. Springs had returned to teach English to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. This is her tenth year teaching after five years out of the classroom. Although teaching is currently online, Springs feels that "everyone is working together the best we can and helping each other."
Mrs. Ashley Powell
Mrs. Ashley Powell is a new Career Academy teacher, meaning she teaches different classes on Tunstall's APEX program. She's been teaching for 26 years and received her education from Averett and the University of Virginia. "I live in the [Tunstall] community and support Tunstall. I just love everything about it."
Mrs. Kelly Burton
Mrs. Kelly Burton has joined our Trojan family this year to teach Earth Science and Biology. She has been teaching for 14 years and spent 3 years at Tunstall and 11 of those years at Westover Christian Academy. Since her return she has seen, "a few familiar faces but also a lot of new faces."
Ms. Kathryn Forney
Tunstall alumna Ms. Kathryn Forney, who has taught at Bonner, Dan River, and Tunstall Middle, has joined the math department. She has been teaching for ten years and is teaching algebra in parts and geometry in parts. "I really love the Tunstall community. I actually grew up in the Tunstall community and graduated in 2007."
Ms. Cierra Gunter
Ms. Cierra Gunter teaches computer information systems, digital applications, and desktop/multimedia/web technology. Gunter received her education from THS and Averett University. As a Tunstall alumna she is "happy to be back home."
