Free Education: Is it worth it?
The average cost of a college education ranges from less than $20,000 to over $50,000 per year. Many who have the desire for this education just do not have the resources. But what happens when students find out they could go to college for free?
President Obama has recently proposed to make community college tuition-free. In his State of the Union Address, Obama promoted a government program that will completely cover the costs of education for those enrolling. Will this make a two year program more desirable than a four year institution? Can a price tag really be put on a four year college experience?
This new proposal has caused attention from both sides, but for many who will be applying to colleges soon, it is affecting their decisions.
While the idea of going to college without a price tag seems appealing to many, it’s still not affecting some. “I already plan to attend DCC prior to obtaining my bachelor’s degree,” junior Trey Dallas said.
Also, for many, the desire to be part of a college campus away from home is more important than the price of education. Senior Emily Komornik said,”The certain degree I want cannot be obtained through community college. I’m ready to be a grown up (or closer to it) and living with my parents another two years gives me hives.”
Going away to college allows one to branch out, make new friends, experience new things, and build up a new level of maturity,” said Komornik.
