Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center
When thinking about the next steps in life, it can get pretty confusing. Some students want to enter the trade world or service world. Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center is a perfect place for students who want to enter these types of fields.
Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center, also known as PCTC, is a vocational-based school that prepares high school students to go into trade careers right out of high school or shortly after.
PCTC offers 19 programs including auto body, auto technology, automation and robotics, computer systems technology, computer network hardware operations, cosmetology, criminal justice, culinary arts, electricity, EMT, horticulture science, HVAC, industrial technician maintenance, nursing assistance, precision machining, small animal care/veterinary science, teachers for tomorrow, and welding.
Almost all of these courses offer college credits, certifications, and some end with associates degrees. Some programs are only the duration of one year, allowing students to take up to two programs. Students can partake in one program junior year, and another during senior year.
Both computer classes allow students to explore the inner workings of the hardware and systems of computers.
Students in the welding program will earn all their welding certifications as they graduate from high school, allowing them to enter the field right after they graduate. “The program has impacted me in many ways, the most influential being the people I’ve met along the way,” said senior Brooklyn Price who is enrolled in the welding program.
“PCTC is a great way to learn how to act in a workplace and it teaches the responsibility needed to be around the equipment used,” said Price.
Teachers for tomorrow allows students to be involved in classrooms through internships and be hands on. Students will graduate with 16 college credits and a career studies certificate in Early Childhood Education. I am currently enrolled in this program and I enjoy it. I have always wanted to pursue teaching, and this program assured me that I wanted to become a teacher. I have grown so close with my students at my internship and I love them all so much. They motivate me so much to keep going on my journey to become a teacher.
PCTC allows students to explore different careers at no cost to them to see if this is really what they would like to pursue in life. This saves students time and money for college.
