John Mills moves forward

John Mills is one of the graduating seniors this year. His unique skill of standing out wherever he goes is shown all throughout Tunstall. He is very active in school clubs, sports, and activities. He is a student at the Piedmont Governor’s School where he takes four of his six classes this semester.

“My favorite class is probably statistics. I just really like the teacher and the curriculum is not too hard or too easy. I just like doing math,” Mills says.

John spends his afternoons going to soccer practice and doing homework. One of the hobbies he has is doing Taekwondo. He usually takes lessons, but he hasn’t taken them recently. He has been taking lessons since he was seven years old.

Apart from playing soccer, Mills is a part of four clubs: Beta Club, Interact, FCA, and vice president of SCA. John Mills also referees from time to time in youth league soccer.

“I like it a lot. It’s a different perspective from playing soccer. I see the game differently from people who just play soccer or just referee.”

John Mills is one of the very few students graduating that received a full-ride scholarship. Mills applied to two colleges: East Carolina University and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

“I got accepted to both. I wanted to go to ECU from the beginning. Both of my sisters went and I love the opportunities they have there.”

Mills received the Chancellor’s Fellow Scholarship. The Chancellor’s Fellows is a scholarship awarded through the college’s Honors College to one student who applies for it. Every student in the Honors College receives a scholarship. The scholarships all vary in dollar amounts; these amounts are determined solely on merit and essays.

When asked what should students do to achieve the things he’s achieved, Mills stated, “Set your eye on the prize. Put your head down and just bear through it. It’s hard sometimes to keep going, but in the end it’s all worth it.”
