Nintendo and Sony have recently had showcases of new games coming to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch consoles. As we slowly come to the end of the year, we get the latest game updates and releases. Here are some of the highlights of both.
Starting with the Nintendo Direct, it was filled with new and old titles coming to the Switch like Trombone Champ being new and F-Zero being familiar to older fans with the last game being made in 2004. Some of their previous titles are getting sequels like Detective Pikachu Returns and WarioWare: Move It! Nintendo has also announced that they are making a gallery called the Nintendo Museum, where all their consoles, games, and products over the company’s history will be displayed. They estimated the museum will be finished around March 2024. The biggest highlight that stood on top of this direct was the Mario series.
They announced five new Mario games without including Super Mario Bros: Wonder. The first game announced was Mario vs. Donkey Kong. This is a strategy game, where the player has to navigate through the course by avoiding traps and using the environment around them to find the stolen toys and put a stop to Donkey Kong. For the first time, Princess Peach is getting her own game called Princess Peach: Showtime!, where the player changes Peach’s outfit to unlock new abilities and escape the haunted theater. Super Mario: RPG, originally came out in March of 1996, and is being remastered and ported to the Switch alongside Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door both games having a turn-by-turn action style of gameplay. Luigi’s Mansion 2 (or Dark Moon), has a story based gameplay and was released originally on the Nintendo 3DS. It is also being revamped to the Switch. This is one of the best Nintendo Directs of the year.
As for the Playstation showcase, it started off weak but then got to better games at the end. After nearly eight years since it was released on Xbox, Roblox is now finally coming to Playstation. The Avatar series is getting a game called Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, a story based action adventure game. Foamstars, a third-person shooter similar to Nintendo’s Splatoon series, has announced that the beta will be playable soon. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, an action RPG, will be released in February of 2024 and will continue where the Final Fantasy 7: Remake left off on their 36 hour long story.
The biggest highlight of the Playstation showcase was Spider-Man 2.
Although they have already told us the date of release and showed gameplay for Spider-Man 2, they continue to give us more facts and tease players more about the game coming in October this year. The developers have confirmed that Spider-Man 2 will have a bigger map than in the previous game. It will also have a new skill tree that improves on what the first game did, being able to build both Spider-Men up to their fullest potential. Speaking of the two Spider-Men, they have confirmed that both Peter Parker and Miles Morales will be playable and the player will be able to switch whenever they want to and may even require a specific Spider-Man to do a mission in the game. Even though the Playstation direct started off slow, it still showed many great games coming to the Playstation 5.
Although the year is slowly coming to an end, there are a bunch of games that players can be expecting this year and in 2024. There are so many big titles to look out for this year.
