The Roman Empire has been very popular with teenage boys recently. It has now become a trend to ask your guy friend or boyfriend the question, “How often do you think about the Roman Empire?” and surprisingly the typical answer is pretty often. If you ask a couple of your guy friends this question, you might end up getting a good laugh out of it. Three guys, who love history and are currently enrolled in AP government, were asked how often they think about this empire and their responses were all what was expected. Girls tend to not ever think about this. In fact, it seems pretty irrelevant to the majority of us. Which is why girls can find this topic so fascinating that guys would care to think about this in their free time.
Senior Bennett Reynolds, a history lover, was asked the question. “I think about the Roman Empire at least twice a week,” Reynolds answered. He always thinks about the empire in a positive way, according to him. “The Roman Empire is the best empire to ever exist,” Reynolds said. Reynolds thinks highly of the empire, mainly due to its sheer size and longevity of its rule.
Current co-Valedictorian of the senior class, Azam Khan, said that he thinks about the Roman Empire around three times a week. When asked why he thinks about the empire at least three times a week, he said, “I think about how July and August both have 31 days in the month. Because July and August both have 31 days, Julius Caesar named a 31 day month himself and Augustus Caesar wanted to match him. This is why we have two months back to back with 31 days in it,” Khan said.
Senior Jackson Lester, another diligent student at THS, said he thinks about the Empire pretty often or at least once a week. “The Roman Empire is very fascinating and cool. How it [lasted] so long, then just fell at a pen drop,” Lester said. He also stated that the Empire has many impacts today like religious beliefs, advances in technology and engineering, and implementing laws.
The Roman Empire, as you can see, is a very popular topic in a male teenager’s brain. It still fascinates me how one detail in history can be such a hot topic hundreds of years later. Next time you are talking to a guy, maybe ask him the famous question, “How often do you think about the Roman Empire?”
