If someone were to go to the theaters and watch the latest Marvel movie or series, they might notice a lack of story, a lower quality of the CGI, or it may seem too child friendly. Back in 2019, Marvel concluded their third phase of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) with Avengers: Endgame. Most Marvel fans after the movie waited around for the Spider-Man movies and some of the new Marvel shows coming out. Unfortunately, these would not stop the inevitable downfall of Marvel that would soon come.
One big factor that led to its downfall was its story. In 2019, Avengers: Endgame was built off of the previous movies to have a climatic finish to end that phase of movies. Now most of the characters from the previous phase have been killed off the story: like Iron-Man and Captain America. With most of the main cast gone, people can’t really bond with the rest of the remaining characters. Now that the hype and excitement with the MCU is gone, the start of their downfall has arrived.
Another factor that led to the downfall was the shows they were making. Marvel started making TV shows and gave characters like Loki, Falcon, and the Scarlet Witch more screen time. They attempted to tie the shows together with the movies. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness attempted to tie Wandavision to Doctor Strange. However, the watcher would not have needed to watch the series too far in depth. They also did spin-off shows about new characters being added to the MCU like Moon Knight or She-Hulk. Other than Moon Knight and Loki most of the shows did not do too well. Marvel was essentially wasting thousands of dollars on side projects, which lowered the budget on other Marvel movies.
Disney purchased Marvel in 2009, and since then the MCU has become more child friendly. It might not sound as bad as it seems, but it has had a big effect on Marvel. Over time it has limited the funny jokes and puns Marvel movies use to have, and it slowly has gotten less amusing. For example, She-Hulk lacked a decent plot and instead gave She-Hulk the ability to break the fourth wall and tell bad puns. This has given unfamiliar characters a bad reputation that will influence future shows and movies they’re in. Even though Disney has done amazing things with Marvel over the years, they have also dragged them down in the same rabbit hole that Disney has been in for a couple of years now.
There could have been a lot more factors of why Marvel is now at its lowest, but these are some of the main reasons why Marvel is in the current downfall. Fortunately, Marvel is still a very relevant topic to younger and older generations and will be an iconic company for years to come.
