Facebook Marketplace is an extension of Facebook that allows users to post ads for jobs, houses, cars, and pretty much anything you can think of. Marketplace is Facebook’s effort to break into the online market space. Competing with the likes of eBay and Craigslist.
Marketplace leverages its customer base through Facebook’s social network. Users already on Facebook can use the tool without downloading another app. This feature allows consumers to quickly access Marketplace whilst scrolling through their social media feed. But most people in our generation don’t even use Facebook for its intended purpose. They use it just for Marketplace.
Marketplace is a valuable tool for high school students because you can find good deals. “I love finding good deals on truck parts, PC parts, game consoles, and just pretty much anything,” senior Bennett Reynolds said about the website. It seems this ideology is shared all throughout the senior class, as senior Chase Payne said, “I use Marketplace to trade wheels mainly for my truck.” The pure amount of customizability on Marketplace can allow you to search for anything you want or whatever you need.
I even use Marketplace but not very often. My case cannot be made for others, as Reynolds said, “I’m pretty much on Facebook Marketplace every day, multiple times a day.” It seems like many people just enjoy looking at everything Marketplace has to offer mainly due to the sheer amount of products on the site.
The use of Marketplace seems like a heavily male dominated tool. Every female student I asked said they don’t use it at all. Senior Sophie Wilson said, “I often find Facebook Marketplace useless; there’s nothing on there for me.”
