Halloween is one of the greatest and most exciting holidays! There is no better movie for this occasion than Hocus Pocus.
Hocus Pocus is the story of Max and Dani Dennison, two kids from LA that moved to Salem just a few weeks before Halloween. They would inevitably be the two kids destined to light the black flame candle, resurrecting the Sanderson Sisters and bringing them back to life for one night. (It was really just Max’s fault.)
The Sanderson Sisters: Sister witches, Winifred Sanderson (Bette Midler), Sarah Sanderson (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary Sanderson (Kathy Najimy), would have one night to suck the lives out of all the children of Salem before the sunrise or else they would turn to dust and “cease to exist.”
Opening Scene: The opening scene of Hocus Pocus is set 100 years before the sisters return. It is the story of their death. After Sarah lured a young girl, Emily Binx, to their house so they could suck up her soul, her family found them and killed the witches. However, not before they could turn her brother, Thackery, into a black cat that could never die.
The Candle: On Halloween night, Max and his sister, along with his little crush, Allison, visit the house of the Sanderson sisters, where they meet a talking black cat: Thackery Binx.
Max, in an idiotic attempt to show off, lights the black flame candle bringing the sisters back. The three children (and their new cat bestie) run away in terror with Winifred’s prized possession: her “boooooooooooooooook.”
After realizing what they have done, the three decide they must stop the wretched witches. By this time, of course, the witches are already after them because they need the book in order to make the potion to suck up all the children, obviously.
Then there is a dead guy losing his head, a fire music number, some hypnotized parents, a bus incident, a run-in with Satan, and the kids finally are at home and safe in their beds.
Being all cozy and safe in their beds, Max and Allison decide to open the book to find a way to help fix Thackery because that sounds like a smart idea.
Just as the Sanderson sisters accept their fate, the book somehow makes a big light beam shoot into the air that the kids just happen to not see. The sisters follow the light, steal Dani, and make a potion.
Ending: On the way to save Dani, Max gets stuck in traffic because Sarah has hypnotized all the children to make their way to the Sanderson house for “the reaping.”
When Max gets to the house, he is very heroic and tricks the sisters (with his headlights) into thinking it is daytime. Then he pours out almost all of the potion and saves his little sister.
They all go to the graveyard because it is hallowed ground that the sisters can’t touch. Sadly, soon the sisters show up on a broom, mop, and vacuum (their brooms were stolen by trick-or-treaters) with a vial … filled with enough potion for just one.
After trying to feed it to Dani, Winifred falls off her broom and drops the potion. Brilliant, amazing, perfect big brother Max picks it up and drinks it to protect his sister. By the time Winifred picks him up to collect his soul, it is sunrise and the hallowed ground is turning her slowly to stone and then poof, they are dust and everyone is saved! The End, Happy Halloween!
