DECA is a National organization for students in high school or even some colleges to participate in. DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America. The THS DECA advisors are Ms. Goard and Mrs.Gunter.
“It is a chance for kids to take what they learn in the classroom and actually apply it to real case scenarios. It’s also a way for students to learn leadership skills and step outside of their comfort zones during the competition,” Goard said. DECA’s current community service project is Socktober which is where students can bring an unopened, new pair of socks and donate them to charity. There is a drop off box located outside of F203. DECA stops accepting socks for Socktober on October 31. The next community service project for November is Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes. DECA will host a meeting to pack the shoeboxes, but the date of the meeting is to be announced.
DECA will head to district competition in November. District competition is when DECA chapters from all around the district gather to compete against each other. Before attending competition, you must take the general knowledge test the week before. Then you will go to Dan River Church the week after to compete. Requirements to compete in district competition are: you must be involved in a marketing class 1st or 2nd semester, join for the year to be a part of the DECA chapter, have kept good grades, and have no disciplinary issues.
To stay up to date with the DECA chapter, listen to the announcements in the morning and afternoon, or you can visit the THS DECA Instagram page @tunstall.high.deca.
