The trend “girl math” is taking the internet by storm. Girl math is an instance where a girl is trying to justify an action by using math that does not quite make sense. For example, if she returned a shirt and got $20 back, that is money she earned, not money that was returned to her. She is free to spend that money anywhere. The Trojans often use girl math, and they have some opinions on it as well.
Sophomore Carleigh Setliff is a girl mathematician. Setliff thinks that girl math makes a lot more sense than people say. “It makes so much sense in my brain,” Setliff said. She uses girl math most often when she pays for herself, especially if her mom decides not to pay for her. “If I use an app on my phone to pay, like my cash app, then whatever I bought is free,” Setliff explained.
Girl math is not just for teenage girls. Teacher Kaylee McGuire uses girl math quite often as well. McGuire’s use of girl math is another commonly used scenario. “If I’m paying for an item in cash, it’s pretty much free,” McGuire said, “It doesn’t matter if I pulled that money out of my bank account a week ago, it’s still free.” She thinks that girl math is pretty functional, but not functional enough to where society could run off of it.
Girl math has always been a thing, but girls have just now started to talk about it. “It’s the way my mom thinks, the way I think, it’s the way every woman thinks,” McGuire elaborated. She said she doesn’t use girl math as much as the average girl, but she does use it a lot.
Freshman Delaney Mantooth is no stranger when it comes to the topic of girl math. She thinks that girl math is a funny trend that she can relate to. “I use girl math like every single day,” Mantooth said. Since she uses girl math in her everyday life she had plenty of examples to give, but she uses one particularly more than others. “If I don’t spend money today then I’ve pretty much doubled my budget for the next day,” Mantooth said.
She also relates it to her diet as well. “If I eat really healthy and workout one day, then I can have the next day to rest and eat junk food,” she elaborated. Mantooth has heard of another form of math called boy math. She also knows a thing or two about this as well.
Girl math is all for fun, but it is very functional at the same time. THS students use girl math regularly whether they realize it or not. Though girl math is a fun trend on social media, it does hold a place in every girl’s heart.
