87th Oscars premiere "Moving Picture Show"

Hosted at the Dolby Theatre by Neil Patrick Harris, the 87th Oscar awards were given out to the best and brightest of the movie industry on February 22, 2015. It began with an inspiring song called “Moving Pictures” sung by Harris, Anna Kendrick (dressed as Cinderella from Into the Woods) and Jack Black. The performance honored all types of movies from E.T. to 50 Shades of Grey and Gone Girl.

The first award was given to J.K Simmons for best actor in a supporting role from Whiplash. Simmons accepted his Oscar with a smile and an acceptance speech about “calling your parents”.

Performing in the theatre, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine sang “Lost Stars” to a candle lit background, while Tegan and Sara and The Lonely Island sang “Everything is Awesome” from Lego Movie. “I’m Not Going to Miss You” was performed later on in the night by country singer Tim McGraw, along with Rita Ora and her “Grateful”.

Animated feature film went to Big Hero 6, leaving How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Box Trolls in the dust.

After a short commercial break, Harris began again on stage by announcing the presenters in his tightie-whities and black socks, reenacting a scene from Birdman and admitting how noble being an actor can be.

The sound mixing award went to Whiplash, beating out favorites like Interstellar and Birdman, but American Sniper took home the sound editing award.

Best actress in a supporting role went to, with a joke about Meryl Streep, Patricia Arquette for her Boyhood role. She gave a memorable speech about “equal rights for women” and rallied people in the crowd.

The three most anticipated Oscars were saved for the end of the night, after Harris revealed his lock-and-key predictions. Best actor went to Eddie Redmayne who played Steven Hawking from The Theory of Everything, while best actress was won by Julianne Moore for her role in Still Alice. Best film went to Birdman, which also won best original screenplay.
