The Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) franchise is well known to mostly anyone that has played video games. Its unique form of gameplay has inspired the gaming community to make thousands of fangames that replicate the style of play and make songs about the story of the game. Now, after nearly nine years of waiting, FNAF is finally in theaters.
Although it’s not the first video game to be adapted into a movie, this stands out because FNAF is the first indie game to be released in theaters. Indie games are developed by one developer or a small group of developers and are not owned by big companies like Nintendo and Sony. So the gaming community had to build the franchise up themselves, and this will lead to its fame with fans and newcomers. Scott Cawthon, producer of both FNAF games and movie, has made video game history.
Before Cawthon made the FNAF franchise, he was already making several video games himself that wouldn’t get that much recognition. He mainly did this to support his family the best way he knew how. He was also religious and believed god wanted him to make those games. After making the game, Chipper and Sons Lumber Co. reviewers were shaken up over the animatronic movement of the characters. This led Cawthon to start making the first game of Five Nights at Freddy’s.
The result of this action was unlike anything the internet has seen. The game received so much popularity in such a short time. Youtubers like Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, Dawko, and MatPat would gain fame by playing the game and constantly trying to find all the secrets and lore of the game. Shortly after the first game, Cawthon would release the second game four months later. From the two game alone, he made roughly 21 million dollars. With all the support came the start of his own company, Scott Cawthon Productions.
This has to be one Scott Cawthon’s greatest achievements. As of right now, the movie has made 132 million dollars globally after just a week in theaters. Fans are obsessed with a bunch of the references this movie has, and they want to see this franchise expand more. Although he has retired from making the games, he will always be remembered as the father of Five Nights at Freddy’s.
