Getting your wisdom teeth taken out can be nerve-racking, but it’s something that almost everyone goes through. This surgery often occurs when people are in high school or college. Many students at THS have already gotten theirs out or have planned it in the future. Either way, it’s great to know what to expect before to make things easier.
When preparing for surgery, most people have different things they do to have a smoother surgery. It is often said that drinking pineapple juice before the surgery helps with swelling. One thing that helps people have a smoother recovery is drinking a lot of water before surgery, but the night before, you can’t eat or drink anything after midnight.
Eating after the surgery is very difficult because everything you eat has to be soft or liquid. Finding sweet foods is easier because you can buy Jell-o, pudding, yogurt, and ice cream. Salty foods, however, are a little more difficult to find. Some good salty foods to eat are soup, ramen, and refried beans. One of the most important things to remember is: that after surgery you should not drink out of a straw to avoid dry sockets.
One of the most challenging parts of the recovery process is the pain. For some, this pain is not that bad, but for others, it’s a very painful healing process. Junior Maggie Weller had an unusually smooth recovery. “[My recovery] was really easy. I was fine the next day,” Weller said. For others, recovery takes a week or more and they are in a lot of pain the whole time.
One thing that makes most people nervous is the anesthesia. It is widely known that most people say something funny while under anesthesia, so a lot of people are worried about what they will say. For some, they don’t say much, but for others, they have a lot to say. Some people know what they are saying while others do not; it depends on the person.
Whether you’ve already gotten your wisdom teeth taken out or it’s something that’s happening in the future, use this advice for a smoother experience.
