Mystery dress unraveling social media
Social media users have been puzzled and frustrated by a popular picture of a striped dress this past week.
According to the New York Times, this debate all started when 21-year-old Caitlin McNeill posted this trendy dress on Tumblr. Those who saw the picture argued that it was white and gold while others insisted it was blue and black.
The picture quickly spread to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and even popular news stations. Users were confused why the colors appeared differently.
Celebrities joined in the argument, as well. Taylor Swift tweeted, “I don’t understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it’s a trick somehow. I’m confused and scared. P.S. It’s obviously blue and black!”
Not only are social networkers boggled by this, but scientists are too. The store the dress was purchased from, Romans Originals, explained the actual dress is blue and black.
The color controversy is caused by the picture’s lighting. Scientists say the color seen depends on a person’s eyes and how the wavelengths travel. However, some believe this picture is beyond explanation and needs to be studied more.
The dress is currently sold out on the company’s website because so many people are dying to have their own “mystery dress.” Although there is no white and gold dress currently, Romans Originals hopes to have one for sale soon.
For many, this picture is more than a social media trend. It is a fascinating concept that will continue to spark debates for weeks to come. Hopefully, users can see “eye to eye” on it soon.
