As the 2024 fall sports season begins, the Tunstall High School players are ready to take on their opponents. Our teams are excited to begin a new year with a fresh start and carry the Trojan legacy to many victories. This year, Tunstall is proud to present our volleyball, football, golf, cross country, and cheerleading teams for the fall season. As the year progresses, Tunstall will get to watch as our players continue to grow, develop new skills, and become overall better athletes.
Cheerleading
This year, the Tunstall football varsity cheer team consists of 16 talented young ladies, and the junior varsity team has 12. Our Varsity coach is Terri Echols and JV’s coach is Chatham Middle School teacher, Ms. Allyson Huppert. Last season, our teams put on their best smiles and performances and set the bar high for this season’s teams.
Senior and captain Destiny Flores is a third-year member of the varsity squad. After high school, she hopes to attend James Madison University and pursue cheerleading in college. Being her last year before graduating, she is looking forward to her final season as a Tunstall cheerleader. She says, “I’m so excited! It’s a mix of all emotions. I’m excited, sad, and nervous. Gosh, I am all of the emotions.”
Cross Country
As the 2024 season is just beginning, Tunstall’s cross country team has their shoes laced tightly and their game faces ready. This year’s teams of both boys and girls consist of 33 members, and their coaches are Melinda Jordan and Michael Yeatts. The season officially began on August 28, 2024, with a meet at Angler’s Park, competing against Galileo Magnet School.
Golf
The 2024 Tunstall golf team is prepped and ready for this upcoming season. The team consists of 9 players, 8 of which are boys with only one girl on the team. Tunstall’s golf coach, who has been coaching this team for around 5 years, is Mr. Austin Reynolds.
The golf team’s only female member Tesla Vargas, a junior at THS, has been golfing for 4 years, but this is her third year on Tunstall’s team. When asked how she feels about being the only girl on the team, she said, “Being the only girl on the team feels good because I get to inspire other girls to play golf and to not be scared to play on a boys’ team.”
Football
This year, the varsity Trojans will kick off their season on Friday, August 30 and will have their homecoming game on September 27 versus Magna Vista High School. Last year, the varsity team beat Martinville High School 40-13 during their homecoming game. This win leaves our football fans on the edge of their seats for the upcoming season. This season, the varsity football team consists of 28 players and the junior varsity roster has 29. The varsity team is coached by Kirkland Brown, a THS gym teacher, and 7 assistant coaches. The junior varsity coaches are head coach Tanner Bray and assistant Dan Farmer.
Volleyball
On August 20, 2024, the Tunstall volleyball team hosted a scrimmage against Altavista High School. Both our varsity and junior varsity came out that night as victors, and volleyball fans are hoping for another successful season from our Lady Trojans. This year, the JV team is composed of 13 players and their coach is Katie Moore. In addition, the varsity team also has 13 members who are coached by Paige Echols and Brooke Yeatts. On the varsity team, the youngest player is sophomore Avery Tucker.
Tunstall Trojans are prepped and ready for this upcoming season, and they cannot wait to carry their teams to victory. As the season progresses, our teams will continue to become overall better athletes and develop many friendships along the way. Playing on a team is not simply about winning, but about demonstrating leadership and sportsmanship, which the Trojans are all about.
