The freshmen are not the only ones coming to Tunstall for the first time; some new teachers have also decided to join the Trojan family for the 24-25 school year. Their subjects range from P.E. to history to foreign languages.
Mr. Chad Anderson is a new physical education and health teacher this school year. He went to college at Averett University. This year marks his 22nd year of teaching. Anderson said that he decided to teach physical education because he always liked fitness, and he knew that he wanted to coach. Anderson chose Tunstall because he felt that it had a great sense of community and so far he loves seeing the school spirit among the teachers and students.
Ms. Karalee Rocker is the new foreign language teacher this year. First semester she has two Spanish classes and one French class, and next semester she will have all French classes. “There really [was not] anything I wanted to do other than teaching,” Rocker said. Rocker decided to learn foreign languages because she wanted to speak to other people in their native language when she traveled. When she was at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she went abroad to southern France and learned to speak French. She then came back to the U.S. and took Spanish lessons before traveling to Peru. She taught English as a second language when she was abroad. She taught in Durham, North Carolina, for three years before moving to Paris and studying at Sorbonne University in Paris, France. She received her master’s in French from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. She taught for 20 years at Galileo. She taught with Ms. Sonya Stowe at Galileo before Stowe came to Tunstall. So far she loves how PCS is organized and really likes Mrs. Totten. “I love how enthusiastic the students are,” said Rocker. Outside of school, she loves to watch K-Dramas, go walking, and travel.
Mr. James Thompson will be teaching government and world history this year. He is one of the youngest teachers this year. He attended Averett University, and he graduated last year. He said that he became a teacher because both of his parents were teachers. Thompson is also helping coach the THS football team this year. He is most excited for the football games this year. Outside of school, he likes to fish and watch football.
Mr. Malik Thornton is joining THS as the new band director. He will be teaching at the high school and middle school. Thornton attended Longwood University. “Go lancers,” Thornton excitedly replied. Thornton has always loved music, and he knew that he wanted to pursue a career in music and wanted to be a teacher. Thornton graduated from THS in 2020 and said he is very glad to be back this year. When he is not in school, you can find him volunteering for events at his church or reading his bible.
Mr. Tucker McGuire had a unique start to his time at THS. He was hired over winter break in 2023 and started the first day of second semester. This is his first full year as a teacher here. Last year, he taught Economics and Personal Finance, and he will do the same this year. He is most excited about teaching sports and entertainment marketing this year.. McGuire said that he chose to come to THS because his wife, Mrs. McGuire, also works here. Mr. McGuire went to University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Outside of school he loves to go see basketball games.
THS is very excited to have these new faces join the Trojan family, and we hope to see them here for many years to come.
