Many book series get adapted into movie or TV versions. One of the most popular books to TV series adaptation of 2024 is A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. There have been many debates on whether the directors cast the right actors or not. The books first came out in 2019, and ratings were through the roof. People lined up to read the book to see if they could figure out the mystery. On the other hand, the show has just now come out in 2024 and the ratings are less than positive. Many people who enjoyed the books are claiming that the show is boring and cringe-worthy.
This series is about a school girl named Pip who is trying to uncover the truth about what happened to a recently deceased high school student named Andie Bell. Rumor has it that it was her boyfriend Sal Singh who murdered her and then took his own life, but the details don’t line up. Pip believes that there’s more to the story than everybody is letting on, so for her school capstone project, she chose to reveal the truth about the case of Andie Bell.
Emma Myers, who is most commonly known for her role in the popular Netflix series Wednesday, plays Pip, the main character. One of the biggest differences between Pip in the books and Pip in the series is that in the books, she was described as a high-school senior with sun-bleached brown hair, pale skin, and big green eyes; however, the series failed to match the other descriptions of Pip that were listed throughout the book.
The casting for the character Ravi was also an issue, though not as dire as Pip’s. Ravi’s role in this series is Sal Singh’s younger brother who is convinced that Sal is innocent and does whatever it takes to prove it. When Pip visits Ravi’s house in an attempt to interview him about his brother, they decide to team up and solve this mystery together. Fans didn’t have nearly as much problem with the casting of Ravi as they did with Pip as far as description goes. However, the way he acted in the TV series is drastically different from the book. In the TV series, he was infatuated with Pip immediately after meeting her. In the book, he was more standoffish.
Furthermore, the show’s plot was all about the investigation, and Pip only cared about solving the case, yet in the book, the author showed more of Pip’s personality Jackson provided her life with her friends and family, and the fact that she cares for them. A part that a lot of people enjoyed about the book is the fact that it showed what she wrote for her capstone project and how the interviews were written, which was also left out of the show.
Fans agree that this story is better suited to simply be a book because they couldn’t have given the same experience in the show that they gave in the book. Overall, fans of the book were disappointed with the Netflix series adaptation.
