If there is anyone sure to know the college application process, it is the teachers here at Tunstall High School. What better way to build to VA College Application Week than to dive into the collegiate history of each of our teachers?
Adrian Nester
Adrian Nester is a beloved English teacher here at Tunstall High School. Nester, a Tunstall alumnus, applied for Averett University before her senior year started; she was only 17. However, she knew she didn’t want to stray far from home, and since she was recruited for the AU volleyball team, it felt right to attend Averett. For her major, she states, “I had Mrs. White’s Pre-Algebra class in eighth grade, and I was pretty sure I wanted to be a math teacher.” However, a pre-calculus class in high school proved to be a bad idea. Instead, like her mother, she decided to major in English instead.
The advice Nester would like to provide the seniors this year is, “If they don’t want you, you don’t want them.” Everything will work out the way it should, so don’t stress if you don’t have it all figured out.
Tiffany Bowker
Another Tunstall English teacher who is no stranger to these halls is Tiffany Bowker. Bowker states that one of the biggest impacts on what she wanted to do after high school came from none other than Mrs. Nester. Bowker was a first-generation college student, and Mrs. Nester guided her through the college application process. Teaching had always been Bowker’s plan, but much like Mrs. Nester, she was unsure which content she wanted to teach before she landed on English.
Her advice to the seniors this year is, “Do not let other people’s opinion affect where you want to go to college. Do what makes you happy.”
Quiet and kind Amanda Brown from the Tunstall Science Department didn’t start with wanting to be a high school Biology teacher. Brown began her college education at Danville Community in 2009 before transferring to Longwood as an Elementary Education major. Her time in Elementary Education was short lived because just one year later, she switched her major to Biology with an Earth Science minor. After college, she worked as a veterinary technician before securing a job at Tunstall in 2015.
