Halloween has been a traditional holiday for many generations. Most families have a specific movie that always brings the holiday together. Many of these movies are from their childhood and remind them of what it feels like to be a kid again. To me this is one of the best parts of Halloween. Some movies to get you in the spirit are:
Halloweentown
This movie was produced by Disney and has always been very popular. There are four movies in the franchise, but the best is the first one. It was originally released in October 1998. In this movie, they tell the story of a teenage girl who uncovers the secret that she is from a family of witches. She faces a supernatural problem and must fix it before the whole world is affected. This movie has always been a favorite to me, and if you haven’t seen it then, you are definitely missing out.
Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Spookley the Square Pumpkin is an amazing throwback movie. The movie was produced in 2004 but was based on the book The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano. Although it was played on Disney, it wasn’t produced by them it was released by Kidtoon Films and was later aired on Disney. The movie follows an oddly shaped pumpkin who is made fun of because of his shape. I think it is a little sad but it is still a very good movie.
Casper
To me, Casper is as nostalgic as it gets. I think it is, and will always be, iconic. The movie was released in 1995 and was produced by Universal Pictures. It follows a ghost who peacefully haunts a house in Maine. When a ghost specialist visits the house, he brings along his teenage daughter. Casper and the specialist’s daughter begin to form a friendly relationship. This movie reminds me so much of my childhood and watching it now feels the same as it did years ago.
The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown movies are always iconic but Halloween is not Halloween without watching this movie. It always reminds me of when my family would always watch it together every year. In this movie Linus is trying to prove that the great pumpkin is real; he does this by staying in the pumpkin patch for a night. I think this movie just adds to the comfort and coziness of fall and Halloween.
Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus is always talked about as an iconic Halloween movie. The movie follows three sisters who are witches and are uncovered by a teenager named Max and his sister. With the help of a magical cat Max and his sister must steal their book of spells and stop them. I have a very unpopular opinion on this movie, I think it is so overrated and even though everyone else loves it I can’t stand it.
Most of these movies are the reason that Halloween is so nostalgic for me. As we are getting ready to enter the Halloween season I can say that I will definitely be watching most of these movies.
