This year’s VMAs were held on September 11th, 2024, in Elmont, New York. The MTV Video Music Awards is an awards show that began in 1984. During this awards show, the producers of this foundation pick certain artists to perform. These performances vary through different genres and are scattered throughout the show. Along with these performances, various awards are given to artists voted on by the public.
2024 Performances:
During the 2024 VMA’s, the award show had a total of 18 performances from artists such as Sabrina Carpenter, Chappel Roan, Benson Boone, and many more. At this year’s show, MTV included an award for VMA’s Most Iconic Performance which was won by Katy Perry for her performance of her song “Roar” in 2013. Another award for performances is the PUSH Performance of the Year which was won this year by LE SSERAFIM.
Best in the Genre:
This year, MTV has an award for the best artist in each genre for this year. Taylor Swift took home the award for Best Pop. The award for Best Hip-Hop went to Eminem. Best R&B was given to SZA. Finally, Benson Boone earned the award for Best Alternative. Winning the best in the genre is a huge honor and not easy to achieve.
Outstanding Artists:
The two awards given to the most outstanding artists include the Artist of the Year award and the Best New Artist award. For 2024, the VMA for Artist of the Year was given to Taylor Swift. Over the past year, Swift has continued to impact society, and it was no surprise she was Artist of the Year. The Best New Artist of 2024 was awarded to Chappell Roan. Over the past year, she has gained great fame, and many people love her music. She is most commonly known for her hit song, “HOT TO GO!” Both the Best New Artist award and the Artist of the Year award are huge accomplishments, and these women should be extremely proud of themselves.

This year, there were eight categories for music videos which included the following; Video of the Year, Best direction, Video for Good, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best editing, Best Art Direction, and Best Trending Video.
