At THS, one of the most amazing teachers you will find is Mrs. Kaylee McGuire. Mrs. McGuire is one of the English teachers here who teaches 12th grade English, 10th grade English, and Journalism. She will be teaching a creative writing class next semester, as well. Mrs. McGuire also started a book club after school last year.
Mrs. McGuire attended Dan River High School and graduated in 2017. She then went to Averett University and graduated in 2021. After graduating, she started teaching 8th grade at Chatham Middle School, then got a job at Tunstall. McGuire is now in grad school at East Carolina University to earn her master’s degree. She notes that her high school experience was not the best, which greatly affects the way she treats her students now. When asked why she wanted to be a teacher, McGuire says that this is what she has wanted to do her whole life. English and history were the two subjects she was trying to choose between, but she ultimately decided to teach English because of her high school English teacher.
Mrs. McGuire says her favorite part of her job is getting to build relationships with her students and getting to see them as humans, not just students. Another thing she also loves about her job is that she gets to work next door to her best friend, Ms. Tiffany Bowker. Mrs. McGuire says that working next door to her best friend is the greatest thing in the world. “It gets me through most days,” said McGuire. Not only does she work with her best friend, but she also works with her husband, Mr. Tucker McGuire, although she does not see him very often while in school. In her free time, McGuire says she loves to read and spend time with her family. Being an aunt, she loves to watch movies with her niece and nephew. She says her favorite movie is Titanic, and her favorite book is The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness by Elyn Saks.
Needless to say, Mrs. McGuire is an amazing teacher and an amazing person all around. She is always there if someone needs something and wants nothing but the best for her students. Something she wants everyone to know is “Don’t be afraid to be who you are no matter what the outside expectations are.”
