David Bowie was born January 8, 1947, in Brixton, London. Bowie’s first major hit was his Space Oddity, followed by Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and Let’s Dance. Bowie starred in multiple movies; the one that is known in the 90s was Labyrinth.
The album Space Oddity was released on July 11, 1969. Bowie based one of his songs on Space Oddity “Major Tom” after an actor named Keir Dullea. The movie starring Duella came out in May 1968 in the London theaters. Space Oddity became the No. 1 hit in 1975 after many “unsuccessful albums.”
Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust or another name for it is “Moonage Daydream.” “Moonage Daydream” was released on June 6, 1972, right before the Aladdin Sane album. “Moonage Daydream” was such a huge hit that in 2022, they came out with a movie called Moonage Daydream. The movie involves Bowie’s music, clips of him singing and his fans, and some history involved in it. The album helped expand his music career.
Let’s Dance was released on April 14, 1983. During one of this album’s concerts, Bowie said, “ I was something I never wanted to be.” David Bowie always wanted to be an actor. He never wanted to be a singer, and the Let’s Dance album turned him into something he didn’t want to be. The song “Let’s Dance” in the album was about the dance that people do in their lives.
The Labyrinth movie was made on June 17, 1986. The movie was made everywhere in America and in London, but most of the scenes are in New York. Labyrinth is about a sixteen-year-old girl named Sarah who wishes her baby brother Toby away. When he is taken, she has 13 hours to solve the labyrinth to save her baby brother from the Goblin King Jareth played by David Bowie. The movie only had five actors on set, and the rest of the characters were large puppets. A fun fact about the movie is that if you look really close to a scene in the movie, you can see the strings of the puppets. Labyrinth is a comedy, musical, fantasy, action, and adventure. During an interview for the movie, Bowie said, “ I was pretty well hooked from the beginning.”
A fun fact about David Bowie is if you look at his eyes, he has different size pupils which is called Anisocoria. Anisocoria is a rare disease which is caused by major trauma to the eyes. Bowie was in a fight with a friend, and his fingernail scratched his eye. It paralyzed the nerve in his eye. Bowie also shares the same birthday with Elvis. Bowie died on January 10, 2016, just two days after his birthday.
“I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring” – David Bowie (Brainyquote)
