I’m curious about whether we’ll get some snow this year. The snowfall in Virginia has been all over the place lately. For example, the winter of 2020-2021 was super mild, and we hardly saw any snow in a lot of areas. Then, the winter of 2021-2022 was better, bringing in a decent amount of snow, especially in the western parts of the state. But in my area, we didn’t get much at all.
Winter weather here can be unpredictable. Weather experts are already making their predictions for this winter. The National Weather Service and other climate models think we might see an average to above-average amount of snow this season. So, if you live in the mountains, get ready for potentially heavier snowfall than those of us closer to the coast. Historically, most of Virginia usually sees the heaviest snowfall in January and February. The amount changes from year to year, but looking at past data can give us some hints. For instance, Norfolk usually gets less than 10 inches a year, while places like Roanoke and Charlottesville can get more than 20 inches. Even though we can make educated guesses based on what we know, the weather in Virginia can always throw us a curveball.
Considering the recent trends, it seems like this year might be snowier, especially with current climate influences. I really hope we get more snow this year because the past couple of winters have been pretty disappointing with hardly any snow at all. It used to be so much fun waking up to all the snow on the ground, going outside to sled, and building snowmen with my siblings. Lately, it seems like we barely get enough to even cover the ground. I miss those snowy days, and it would be great to relive those moments again this year.
