Cheer season begins
Cheer clinics began Monday, March 23, and ended Wednesday, March 25, with tryouts on Friday, March 27.
Girls were required to do a cheer, chant, dance, and jumps that were taught at the clinics.
On the first day girls went through motion drills and jumps before learning the cheer and chant.
The second day the girls reviewed everything from day one and learned the dance.
The third and final day the girls reviewed everything that was taught to them all week and went in groups to show everyone. The day concluded with a mock tryout done by seniors, Shelby Webster and Tamra Echols, and then everyone came together to do the “go bananas” dance.
“I thought tryouts went very well. Both seniors did a great job with the material and a majority of the girls trying out really seemed to push themselves to learn the material,” said varsity coach, Caitlyn Dishman.
On Thursday the girls got a break to practice at home before tryouts. All the girls showed up Friday in their white shirt and red shorts and practiced in the halls until it was there turn to go in. Tryouts began at 3:30 and ended about 7:15.
On Saturday morning the numbers the girls wore for clinics and tryouts were posted on the gym door under the squad the girl made. Both JV and varsity accepted 13 girls.
“My expectations for the season, just like the previous seasons, are set high. Since scores this year really put emphasis on the girls’ jump technique, motion sharpness and placement, voice projection, and dancing ability, I expect a lot out of the girls who made it,” said Dishman.
