What to watch before prom
Every teen wants a memorable prom night whether it be getting crowned queen, having the perfect dress, or simply not falling down the stairs. Before the big night, students should check out these movies to see how these characters’ proms will compare to theirs. These movies were picked for their lessons in support, friendship, love and of course, dancing. Here are the top four:
1) Radio Rebel: When senior Tara Adams decides to become “Radio Rebel” and host a secret radio talk show, it stirs up trouble throughout the school. Students love her relatable perspective and honest confessions, but the school’s administration does not. On the big night, Radio Rebel is chosen to be prom queen, but there’s a problem. If Adams reveals her true identity, she will face expulsion. However, when she shows her true self the student body does something shocking. Every person in the audience chants that they’re Radio Rebel and they deserve the punishment too. As a result, the administration revokes her expulsion. When she is finally crowned, Adams says, “Since we’re all Radio Rebel, this crown belongs to all of us.” This was a memorable scene, because it shows what can be accomplished when people work together.
2) High School Musical 3: This movie focuses on East High wildcats’ senior year. It shows main characters Troy Bolton, Gabriella Montez, Sharpay Evans, Taylor McKessie and Chad Danforth preparing for their senior prom. From prom proposals on the roof to waltzing in the rain, this move highlights young love and the excitement of the special event. As their popular song, says “It’s going to be a night to remember, that’s for sure. Come on now, big fun, alright! It’s going to be the night to last forever, forever more. We’ll never ever forget.” The theme for their prom is “The Last Waltz.” For seniors, this is a definite must-watch because they can relate to what the characters are experiencing.
3) Grease: When Rydell High students find out their prom will be broadcasted on American Bandstand, they all want the attention of the camera on them. Senior Sandy Olsson expects a perfect night with her date, Danny Zuko. The spotlight is on them as they share a sweet dance, but one of Zuko’s girls from the past gets jealous. She sneakily steals him away, dances with him in front of the cameras, and leaves Olsson to run out crying. This shows how a prom night can be ruined if someone lets their past or jealousy get the best of them.
4) Bad Hair Day: High school student Monica never imagined that buying a pawn shop necklace could turn her prom day into such a wild ride. While trying to get ready, a former detective, Liz, knocks on her door. In order to learn more about the stolen necklace, Liz offers Monica a ride for her hair appointment. Since Monica’s parents aren’t home and she missed her driving test, she agrees. Throughout the day, the two form a special bond by getting chased by a thief, sent to jail by a mall cop, and recklessly driving a stranger’s car. By the end of the day, Monica is left without a prom date, dress, shoes, or a necklace. Liz arranged to get those items for her and they are more impressive than Monica could’ve ever dreamed. The lesson of this movie is that a “bad hair day,” might be better than it appears.
