Trojan’s trip to the big apple
Students in Mr. Touart’s advanced world history class headed to the big city on Thursday, April 14th. The trip was an overall success with many exciting attractions along the way. Not only was this an amusing trip, it was also a learning experience for many.
On Thursday, the Trojan’s departed from Dry Fork, Virginia and made their way to the Holiday Inn Totowa in New Jersey, almost an hour outside of New York City. On the way, they stopped in Maryland for dinner. “The crowded bus ride was occasionally annoying,” stated senior Kyle Davis. Then, after hours of anticipation, they finally arrived at the hotel around 11 P.M.
Friday was the first busy day of activities. Students woke up at 8:30 A.M. and headed straight for New York. The first place they went to visit was the United Nations. The next activity was visiting the MoMa, which is the Museum of Modern Art. “This was my favorite part because I got to see “Water Lilies” and “Starry Night” in real life which was amazing,” said senior Amber Murphy. Next, they ate lunch at the Grand Central Station. After eating, students visited the Central Park for a couple of hours.
“New York City was incredibly busy with plenty to do while Danville is so tiny with few activities to do,” stated Davis. Then, the group ate dinner again at Schnipper’s.
After dinner they toured the Top of the Rock. “I loved this because the view was simply amazing,” said junior Katie Scarce.
Saturday marked another hectic day in New York. The first attraction was a ferry boat ride to Ellis Island where they got to tour the Statute of Liberty. “I learned that the Statute of Liberty is a lot smaller than it seems,” stated Murphy. After visiting the Statute of Liberty, the students ate lunch in Times Square, then rode a subway to the 9/11 Memorial. They spent a total of three hours in Times Square. The group ended the with dinner at Ben’s, which is a very tasty Jewish restaurant.
Sunday ended the remarkable trip to New York. The group’s last destination was a tour of the Natural History Museum. “I would have rather gone to Chinatown and Little Italy instead of the Natural History Museum,” said Murphy. They ate lunch at Little Italy and said their goodbyes to the Big Apple.
The students really enjoyed their trip to New York and are willing to go back either with the school or family. This will definitely be a trip that they will never forget.
