Fishing, volunteering, and creating: THS clubs
Along with the new school year comes the start of a variety of clubs. Whether you’re interested in community service, robotics, or even fishing, there is a club for you.
Interact Club: Are you interested in volunteering and helping the community? The requirements for the Interact Club are simply being interested in community service. The fees are $10 for new members and $5 for returning members. There is no cut off date but if you want a t-shirt return the club dues to Mrs. Nester by September 8. There are many new volunteer projects coming up for this club this September such as: Out of the Darkness Suicide Walk, Alzheimer’s Walk, and baking cookies for the River City Ride. The first club meeting is on Sept. 8 after school in the library.
Art Club: If you love art and have previously been in a high school art class or signed up for this 2016-2017 school year then you are invited to join the Art Club! The fees are $10 and should be turned in to Mrs. Evans. There is no official due date for joining the club, however, it will be sometime in September. The first club meeting was on Aug. 23, where the group discussed several upcoming projects.
FCCLA: To be in the FCCLA (Family, Career, Community leaders of America) you must be in a Career and Technical Education class. The fees are $15, and there is no cut-off date.
Fishing Club: The Fishing Club is starting its second year. The requirements for the club are a 2.0 GPA and access to a fishing boat. The club is raising money for tournament fees at an event to be held at West Side Diner on Saturday, September 10. There will be a tournament on Sept. 17 at Buggs Island.
Trojan Club: Do you play a varsity sport? If so, the Trojan Club would be perfect for you. The fee is only $5 and should be turned in to Mrs. Potts. There is no cut-off date for joining the club, but there will be for ordering a shirt. They have not scheduled a first meeting yet. There are already several projects in the works; one of them will be the annual Powder Puff game scheduled for Oct.6. There are more projects to come, so stay tuned.
FBLA: Are you in a business class with Mr. Beard or Mrs.. Harris? Then you should join FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Those interested in joining should pay $15 to Mrs. Harris. The first meeting will be announced on the morning announcements. There is not a cut-off date for this club. Projects will be discussed and decided at the first meeting.
French: Have you completed 1-2 years of French? Then you should join French Club. The dues are $15 and should be turned in to Ms. James. There is no cut-off date for this club. They have not yet decided when their first meeting will be held.
FCA: Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a student-led club that anybody can join. There are no pre-requisites, but there is a $15 fee in order to receive a t-shirt. Meetings take place every Wednesday in Mrs. Harris’ room, B101.
Beta Club: The requirements for the Beta Club are a 3.5 GPA, participation in service projects, and attendance. The first member meeting will be held on Sept. 14. The cut-off date for fall applications is Aug. 26 and Jan. 20 for the spring. There are many projects in the works.
SCA: The only requirements for SCA are attending events and be in good standing with school. There are no dues for SCA. The first meeting for SCA is Sept 7th. The current project the club is working on is designing homecoming t-shirts.
DECA: Are you enrolled in a marketing or business class? If so, you can join DECA anytime from now until November 15. The fee is $20 and includes a t-shirt. In this club, you will be able to travel for competitions and participate in various fundraisers. Chapter meetings are the 3rd Wednesday of every month. DECA advisors are Ms. Lisa Baynes, Ms. Michelle Carter, and Mrs. Beth Goard.
Joining clubs is a great way to pursue your interests while making a difference in the school and community. Not only do you get involved at THS through these, but you have the opportunity to meet new people and participate in group activities that would you otherwise not be a part of.
