Volley for the cure
The 2016 Dig Pink volleyball game was held at THS last night in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The games featured the JV team taking on faculty and staff while the Varsity team faced the alumni of Tunstall volleyball. The alumni team ranged from the graduating class of ’94 through the class of ’13. Although there were laughs and jokes shared throughout the night, many were fighting for bragging rights. In the first match, the JV team defeated the faculty and staff 25-20 but the faculty and staff rallied back winning 25-23.
After the game, fans of all ages had the opportunity to win a t-shirt; for the price of one dollar, fans can hit the ball onto the other side of the court where a sea of THS volleyball t-shirts laid. If the ball landed on any shirt, he or she would be able to claim the shirt. In addition, the staff was selling “Dig Pink” shirts in order to raise money for the Danville Cancer Society. They were also selling 50/50 raffle tickets to raise money; the total prize was 90 dollars.
Following the festivities, the Varsity team took on the alumni in a three game set. Coaching the alumni was long-time volleyball head coach, Jackie Hardy, who coached the Lady Trojans from 1983 to 2010. For many, it was a delightful sight to see the legendary coach his former players once more. In the first game, the Varsity team won 25-18, but the alumni forced a third set after they narrowly won the second set. In the last set, the Varsity team won 15-8.
In the end players, fans, alumni and staff were all winners. Everyone had one objective throughout the night: to defeat breast cancer.
Proceeds from the game were close to $1,000.
