Tunstall ESL Teacher Helping Students

Mrs. Venus Hendrix is not only Tunstall High School’s ESL teacher, but she also works at Brosville, Stony Mill, and Tunstall Middle School. ESL stands for English as a Second Language. A new student who speaks another language is required to take an ESL class until he or she passes the tests required.

Mrs. Hendrix helps students in many ways. “She helped me learn English quickly.  In less than two years I took and passed my SOL’s to graduate,” said senior Alonso Escalante.

Mrs.Hendrix went to Geroge Washington High School. After graduating high school, she went to Averett University and majored in elementary education. Before working for Pittsylvania County Schools, she worked in several other places.  She went back to Averett to be able to teach 4-8 Language Arts. Mrs.Hendrix also worked three years at a private school in Chatham.

Mrs.Hendrix was married in October 1986. She has two boys who are now grown and are the most important things to her. Jess graduated from Tunstall in 2008. He is a part-time archaeologist in the state of Florida and attends graduate school full time at the University of West Florida. Nolan graduated from Tunstall in 2012.He played football, basketball, and soccer while at Tunstall. Nolan is now studing to be a nurse practicioner and plays junior college soccer at Patrick Henry. He also coaches a traveling U19 boys soccer team in Meban, NC. Mrs., Hendrix is proud that her boys are doing what they enjoy.

Working at Tunstall she has became a reliable teacher, when help is needed. “She is a really fun and helpful teacher,” said freshman Audrey Manzano.

“She has helped me keep up my grades,” said senior Alonso Escalante. Tunstall’s ESL teacher is a help to many and is proud of her work.
