Recapping the SCAEL season
This SCAEL season was very successful for the Trojans. SCAEL is similar to quiz bowl. Students compete against other schools by answering questions in literature, social studies, science, math, and all around. On Monday, Nov. 28, the teams competed in their final match against Halifax High School at Halifax.
For literature, Tunstall won 130-110. The Trojans also won in Math 220-60 and All Round with a score of 200-180. Tunstall fell in social studies (70-145) and in science (15-95.) Despite the losses, Tunstall is still impressively tied for second place with Bassett 20-15.
The history team finished the season 4-3.
“I think we’ve done really well this season. I know at least for my team, we were nervous about stepping up and answering more questions. I could not be more proud of my teammates and everything we’ve accomplished,” said history captain Maggie Wells.
Math’s overall season score was 6-1.
“We had a team practice every Friday to go through questions and learn how to solve them in the most efficient way possible. We also had short practice sessions right before matches to get out any of the small mistakes we could make,” said math captain Sidney Liles.
The JV team was also tied for second overall 5-1.
Even though a lot of work goes into being on a SCAEL team, members still find ways to make the sport enjoyable.
“My favorite part of doing SCAEL is my team. We joke around with each other all the time,” said Liles.
“My favorite part is the food. Seth and Jarret’s mom made cookies and brownies throughout the season for us to eat before or after the match,” said Wells.
With the conclusion of the fall season, members are already setting their expectations for next semester.
“As we enter into the ACE season in January, I want to start answering more questions even when I’m not completely confident in the answers,” said Wells.
